When their WW2 veteran grandfather loses his grasp of time and place Carlie (18) and Pete (13) must move him into a rest home. Parentless for years and surviving on Gramps’ veterans checks Carlie is unable to find a job. To pay the bills she decides to rent rooms to wounded, displaced vets but the rent money is still not enough. When she learns of a local singing contest the vets help her win two contests, making her eligible for a final $10,000 prize contest. As the contest approaches their itinerant father shows up with a new wife and lays claim to the house forcing Carlie to decide if singing her song for the contest money is more important than giving voice to one of the veterans.
